Turn a TikTok video that performed into a Meta ad

Last checked

Organic reach tells you a video worked with people who were not looking for it. Koda flags one as worth paying to distribute at 20,000 views, or at 5,000 views with at least 6% engagement, and never before it is 24 hours old — because TikTok has not finished distributing before then. It then reframes the winner for the Meta placement rather than re-uploading the vertical master.

The Meta Ads screen in Koda, showing a campaign built from a TikTok video that already performed: objective, daily budget, country, audience, creative and test duration, each line stating the reason it was chosen.
Every line carries its own reason, including the creative: the video is proposed because of what it already did organically, not because it was the most recent one.

When is a video actually worth ad spend?

The threshold is deliberately two-sided: 20,000 views on its own, or 5,000 views with 6% engagement or better. Both mean the same thing — the algorithm pushed it to strangers and they reacted.

Below 24 hours, no verdict at all. A video judged at hour six is judged on a third of its reach, and that is how a winner gets discarded.

What breaks when you reuse the TikTok file directly

TikTok is 9:16. Meta's feed placement wants 4:5 at 1440 × 1800. A straight re-upload is cropped or letterboxed.

But the frame is not what breaks first — the text is. Burned-in subtitles positioned for a vertical safe area fall outside a 4:5 crop, and you generally discover it after the ad is live.

There is a second trap on the Awareness objective: Meta does not display the lower part of a feed video ad on mobile, which means the headline, the description and the call-to-action button are not shown. A 27-character headline written to carry the offer carries nothing.

How do you know the ad is working, once it runs?

Not from ROAS alone. ROAS only means something against your margin: break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your margin rate, so 2× is profitable at a 50% margin and a clear loss at 25%.

Grading campaigns on a fixed "2× is good" scale is how low-margin sellers are told they are winning while they lose money on every sale.

What this does not do

  • It is not an ad-buying console. It is a bridge into one, and Meta Ads Manager remains where campaigns are actually run.
  • Connecting a Meta ad account is in limited access while Meta completes its review of the app. TikTok publishing is fully approved.
  • It cannot make a losing creative profitable. Ad spend behind a video nobody watched buys more of nobody watching.

Frequently asked

Which TikTok videos should I promote?
The ones the algorithm already pushed to strangers: 20,000 views, or 5,000 views with at least 6% engagement, and only once the video is more than 24 hours old.
Can I use my TikTok video as a Facebook ad?
It will upload, but 9:16 does not fit the 4:5 feed frame, so it is cropped or letterboxed. Burned-in subtitles placed for a vertical safe area are the first thing lost.
What ROAS do I need for a Meta ad to be profitable?
Your break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your margin rate. At a 50% margin that is 2×; at 25% it is 4×. There is no universal good number.
Why is my Facebook ad headline not showing?
On the Awareness objective, Meta does not display the lower portion of a feed video ad on mobile — headline, description and CTA button included.
