TikTok engagement rate by views is (likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. Across the platform the average is about 2.65%, but it is not one number for everyone: accounts under 5,000 followers average around 4.86% and accounts over 100,000 average around 2.06%, so a 3% rate is below par for a small account and above it for a large one.

Which denominator: views or followers?

Both are used and they answer different questions. Engagement by followers tells a brand how loyal an audience is, and it is the figure sponsorship rates are usually negotiated on. Engagement by views tells you how a specific video performed with the people TikTok actually showed it to — which on a For You driven platform is mostly people who do not follow you.

This calculator uses views, because that is the one that predicts distribution. A video shown to 100,000 strangers with 6% engagement is a video TikTok is going to keep pushing, whatever your follower count.

Why a small account has a higher rate, and why that is normal

The averages invert with size: about 4.86% under 5,000 followers, about 2.65% platform-wide, about 2.06% over 100,000. The pattern is not a quality signal — a small audience is self-selected and recent, while a large one accumulates followers who stopped caring years ago and never unfollowed.

So comparing your rate to "the TikTok average" without picking the right band tells you almost nothing. Compare against your own size.

Below 500 views, the number means nothing yet

TikTok distributes in waves. The first one is roughly 200 to 500 views in the first 30 to 90 minutes, and until it finishes the algorithm has not decided anything. An engagement rate computed on 80 views is noise: three friends liking it reads as 3.75%.

Wait for the first wave to close before reading the number at all. The one exception worth watching: a very high rate during wave 1 is the signal that wave 2 may be large.

When is a video worth putting ad spend behind?

This is the threshold Koda uses to flag a video as worth promoting, and it is deliberately two-sided: either 20,000 views on its own, or 5,000 views with at least 6% engagement. Both mean the same thing — the algorithm pushed it to people who were not looking for it, and they reacted.

Below 24 hours old, no verdict. TikTok has not finished distributing, and a video judged at hour six is judged on a third of its reach.

Frequently asked

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
It depends on your size. Under 5,000 followers, the average is around 4.86%, so a good rate is above that. Platform-wide the average is about 2.65%, and above 100,000 followers it is about 2.06%. Above 10% is roughly the top 5% of the platform at any size.
How do you calculate engagement rate on TikTok?
Add likes, comments and shares, divide by views, and multiply by 100. Some tools add saves when they have access to them; TikTok’s public API does not expose saves, so a calculator that claims to include them is either guessing or reading a private dashboard.
Why is my engagement rate high but my views low?
Usually because the video has not left the first distribution wave. Under about 500 views the rate is computed on too small a sample to mean anything — a handful of reactions from people who already follow you produces a flattering percentage.
Does engagement rate affect TikTok reach?
Engagement is one of the signals the algorithm reads, and shares are the strongest of them because each share puts the video into a new For You feed. But watch time and completion rate matter more, and neither appears in an engagement rate calculation.
